History
The Independent Bonn International School, now known as IBIS, is the oldest and longest established international school in Bonn. Founded in 1963 by a group of parents, it was for many years called the British Embassy Preparatory School (BEPS).
Originally located in Rüngsdorf, it moved to a villa in Am Büchel before the Stadt Bonn offered the school its present, purpose-built site on the Heiderhof in Bad Godesberg. The school has continued to expand the site. A single-storey extension was opened in 1987 by Their Royal Highnesses, the Prince and Princess of Wales. In 1989 a two-storey extension was added to the main building providing more classrooms for special subjects, along with a library, a computer lab and a kitchen. In 2006 another extension was added to the front of the building giving the school new classrooms, administration offices an a new entrance area. Due to the move of many embassies to Berlin in 1997, the school changed its name to the current one but it is still often referred to locally as the "britische Schule". As well as a large contingent of pupils from Great Britain, the United States and other English-speaking countries, some 33 nationalities are represented. |
